Norway
Fjords, aurora and Arctic light
Overview
Overview
Norway is Scandinavia at its most dramatic — fjords cut a thousand metres deep, the Lofoten islands rising straight out of the Arctic sea, and Tromsø as the world's most reliable aurora base.
We split Norway into two moods: a summer fjord-and-rail journey through Bergen, Flåm and Ålesund, or a winter Arctic journey combining Tromsø, Lofoten and a night at a glass-roofed lodge.
When to go
Best time to visit
Late September to late March for the aurora; June to August for midnight sun, fjord hiking and the Flåm railway at its greenest.
Aurora
Oct – Mar
Tromsø and Lofoten. Longer stays greatly improve odds.
PeakMidnight sun
Jun – Jul
Twenty-four-hour light above the Arctic circle.
PeakShoulder
Aug – Sep
Autumn colour, fewer visitors, first auroras by mid-September.
GoodDeep winter
Jan – Feb
Coldest and clearest; dog-sledding and Sami culture at their best.

Visa, currency, weather and flights
Visa
Norway is in the Schengen area. Indian passport holders apply for a Schengen short-stay visa through the Norwegian mission's appointed centre. Norway's document requirements are among the stricter ones — we prepare a fully evidenced file.
Full visa guide →Currency
Norwegian Krone (NOK). Almost entirely cashless. Cards and phone payments work even on remote ferries and mountain huts.
Weather
The Gulf Stream keeps coastal Norway milder than its latitude suggests. Tromsø in January is usually around -4°C, not -25°C.
Flights
One stop via Doha, Dubai, Helsinki, Frankfurt or Amsterdam into Oslo, 12–16h from India, then a short domestic hop to Bergen or Tromsø.
| Period | Temperature | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jun – Aug | 12–22°C | Mild, long days, best for fjords |
| Sep – Oct | 5–12°C | Autumn colour, aurora begins |
| Nov – Feb | -6–2°C | Polar night in the far north, strong aurora |
| Mar – May | 0–12°C | Aurora into March, then thaw |
| Delhi → Oslo (1 stop) | 12h – 15h | Qatar, Lufthansa, Finnair, KLM |
| Mumbai → Oslo (1 stop) | 13h – 16h | Qatar, Emirates, Turkish |
| Oslo → Tromsø | 1h 55m domestic | SAS, Norwegian, Widerøe |

What our travellers say
Eleven nights, aurora on six. Our Tromsø guide drove three hours into Finland one night to find clear sky. That is the difference.

The Flåm railway and that electric fjord cruise — utterly silent, just waterfalls. I have never been anywhere so quiet.
