Schengen refusal rates for Indian applicants have hovered in the high teens for several years. Almost none of those refusals are mysterious. Here is what actually goes wrong.
1. Accommodation gaps
The single most common issue. Your file must show confirmed accommodation for every night of the trip. One unexplained night — a red-eye train, a friend's apartment without a formal invitation letter — invites a refusal for unreliable itinerary.
2. Insufficient or unexplained funds
Consulates look for a stable balance across six months, not a lump sum deposited three weeks before applying. A large recent credit without explanation reads as a borrowed balance. If a family member is sponsoring you, say so formally and attach their documents.
3. Applying at the wrong mission
You must apply where you will spend the most nights. If nights are equal, apply at your first point of entry. Getting this wrong produces a refusal that has nothing to do with your eligibility.
4. Insurance that does not meet the standard
Minimum EUR 30,000 medical cover, valid across the entire Schengen area, for the full duration including your buffer days. Domestic policies with international riders frequently fail this test.
5. A weak purpose-of-travel narrative
The cover letter does more work than people expect. It should connect your itinerary, your finances and your reason for returning to India — employment, business, family — into one coherent story.
Timeline that works
Apply 90 days before departure. Appointments, not processing, are the bottleneck: summer slots in Delhi and Mumbai often need booking ten to twelve weeks ahead.
If you are refused
You will receive a refusal letter citing a specific ground. Do not immediately reapply with the same file. Address the stated ground, strengthen the evidence, and reapply — success on a corrected second application is common.
