When Is the Best Time to Visit Japan for Cherry Blossom?

The sakura front moves at 25 km a day. Here is how we actually plan around it — and why a fixed-date tour usually gets it wrong.

Every year we take the same call from travellers in January: which week should we book for cherry blossom? The honest answer is that nobody knows yet, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling you a fixed departure.

How the blossom front actually works

Sakura opens first in Kyushu in the south, then travels north at roughly 25 kilometres a day. Full bloom, mankai, arrives about a week after first opening, and petals fall within four to seven days after that. Your usable window in any single city is therefore about ten days — and it shifts by up to two weeks year on year with winter temperatures.

Typical windows by city

  • Fukuoka and Kyushu: 20–28 March
  • Kyoto and Osaka: 26 March – 6 April
  • Tokyo: 24 March – 4 April
  • Kanazawa and the Japan Alps: 3–12 April
  • Sendai and the north: 8–18 April
  • Hokkaido: late April into early May

What we do differently

We hold flexible ryokan rates until 60 days before departure and re-sequence the routing against the Japan Meteorological Corporation forecast, which firms up in early February. In 2025 we moved two departures by four days each and both guests saw full bloom in Kyoto.

The second thing we do is build in altitude and latitude insurance. If Kyoto peaks early, Kanazawa and the Alps will still be days behind, and a two-hour train ride recovers the trip. Fixed itineraries cannot do this. Private ones can.

Booking timeline that works

Seven to nine months out, secure the flights and the anchor properties. February, confirm the routing against the forecast. Thirty days out, the Shinkansen reservation window opens and we book every seat the morning it does — blossom-season trains genuinely sell out.

One more thing

Consider autumn. Koyo, the autumn leaf season in November, is arguably more beautiful, lasts noticeably longer, and costs less. We say this to about a third of our Japan enquiries and roughly half of them switch.
